After police officers responded quickly to a report of a robbery in progress at a bar in Spring Village, they were able to foil the it as one of the bandits was killed during an alleged shootout on Wednesday night.
The dead bandit has been identified only as “Dark Man.”
The other bandit was arrested by police. He is 31 of Mount Hope Road in Mount Hope.
According to a police report, around 9:30 pm the victim, a 53-year-old man from Barataria, was conducting sales at his business place, Roy Sports Bar, located at the corner of Bassie Street and Southern Main Road, Spring Village with two employees and a security officer when two men entered – one armed with a firearm and announced a hold up.
The victim became afraid for his life and handed over an undisclosed sum of cash, one box of alcohol and several packs of cigarettes, the men then relieved several patrons at the bar of cash and other valuables.
A report was made to the St Joseph Police Station and the first responders responded, went to the location and upon arrival saw the two suspects attempting to exit the bar.
On seeing the police, the armed bandit allegedly opened fire on the police, forcing the officers to return fire wounding the alleged shooter. The other suspect attempted to run away but was subsequently apprehended by police officers in the toilet area.
The wounded bandit was taken to the hospital where he was medically examined and pronounced dead at 10:06 pm.
Crime scene personnel processed the scene and the officers recovered one Glock 45 9 mm pistol with a magazine and six rounds of 9 mm ammunition, a black bag with an undisclosed amount of cash, one Jonnie Walker box with several bottles of alcohol, 22 9 mm spent shell, and seven spent 45 shells.
Visiting the scene was Asp Ramharrack, Insp Beepot, Insp Rampallard and other officers.
PC Nicholls, who was injured during the alleged shootout was taken to the hospital where he received medical attention and was later discharged.
