An Amalgamated security officer was held hostage for a few minutes while thieves broke into a supermarket he was on duty at and robbed it of its safe and other valuables on Monday morning.
According to a police report, at about 2.15 pm the 23-year-old officer of Quash Trace in Sangre Grande was at Cost Cutters Supermarket on duty at the El Dorado Cooperative Complex at Corner Caura Royal Road and Eastern Main Road when about seven men approached him.
The men were clad in long sleeve clothing, hats and had bandanas covering their faces.
One of the men used a hammer and broke the glass to the front door of the supermarket.
The men then ordered the security officer to enter along with them and he was held hostage while they robbed the establishment.
The men were seen leaving with a safe containing an undisclosed amount of cash.
The men escaped in a waiting silver Nissan B13 during east along the main road.
