The Beetham Landfill reopens today, after a fire disrupted its operations over the past three days.
In a statement, the Trinidad and Tobago Solid Waste Management Company Ltd (SWMCOL) said it had been working closely with the Environmental Management Authority (EMA) and the Trinidad and Tobago Fire Service (TTFS) following a fire at the landfill earlier this week.
The company confirmed that the TTFS was called in on Monday to contain the blaze, and while a few smouldering areas remain, smoke levels had drastically reduced.
The EMA yesterday told Guardian Media that it continues to monitor air quality around the landfill.
Its Air Unit conducted field inspections yesterday and reported no visible smoke, although a slight odour was detected when the wind shifted.
The EMA said monitoring will continue until conditions return to normal and air quality reaches acceptable levels.
SWMCOL expressed appreciation to the TTFS for its support in containing the fire and thanked the public for its patience and cooperation during the disruption.
The company said it remains committed to the safe operation of the facility and apologised for any inconvenience caused.
National Petroleum closed its Sea Lots offices yesterday because of the fire.
