Sea conditions

The T&T Meteorological Service (TTMS) has issued a Hazardous Seas Alert #1—Yellow Level.

Yellow level means there is the potential of negative impacts. However, damage is avoidable if persons monitor conditions and reduce their level of exposure.

In a public advisory yesterday the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) said large breaking waves are likely to affect mainly the northern coastlines of Trinidad and Tobago.

It said, however, that minimal effects or choppy conditions may occur in sheltered areas as well. These conditions are due to be long period swells with forecast values in excess of 12 seconds. The event is expected to be short-lived and will likely last for 24 hours.

The ODPM, as the lead coordinator of emergency management, joins the TTMS in advising all sea bathers, fishermen, and small craft operators to carefully monitor sea conditions and exercise caution during all sea-related activities.

The ODPM is also advising all residents and visitors to “get ready and stay ready” by implementing the following safety measures:

• Avoid entering the sea if unnecessary;

• Be alert for dangerous breaking waves and currents;

• Follow the instructions of lifeguards;

• Monitor official news sources.

Citizens should continue to monitor the website and social media profiles of the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service and the ODPM for weather forecasts, alerts, warnings and cancellations. Visit www.metoffice.gov.tt or wwww.odpm.gov.tt.

The ODPM has also stated that T&T is not currently under any tropical storm threat, watch or warning.
