A Caroni family was left traumatised yesterday, after three men entered their home and tied them up before robbing them of a quantity of cash, jewellery and alcohol.
Police Kissoon Ramesh, 58, of Kelly Village, was in his front yard around 6.40 am picking flowers when he turned around and saw the suspects.
It was reported that one of the men was armed with a gun while the other had cutlasses.
It is alleged the men forced Ramesh, who is a proprietor, back, into the house and tied him, his wife and their three children, aged 24, 25 and 26, up.
The suspects then reportedly ransacked the house and stole $25,000 in cash, along with a quantity of gold jewellery and alcohol.
As the bandits ransacked the house, however, Ramesh reportedly managed to free himself, get his licensed pistol and fire some shots at the suspects, who managed to escape on foot.
It was unknown up to yesterday if any of the suspects were injured.
Investigating officers carried out checks at medical institutions yesterday to find out if anyone had sought treatment for gunshot wounds as they searched for the suspects. Up to press time, however, they had made no headway in the case.
When Guardian Media visited the family’s home yesterday, no one was there. However, neighbours confirmed the businessman had sought medical treatment after the incident.
This was the second home invasion reported in the Central Division this week.
On Tuesday, 65-year-old Moonan Hardeo, of Caroni Savannah Road, Chaguanas, was shot dead when his son struggled with an armed man who broke into his house.
On December 8, councillor and former Couva/Point Lisas Chamber president Ramchand Rajbal-Maraj and his wife were left traumatised after a bandit broke into their Couva home and held them up at gunpoint.
The owner of Rattan’s Freezone and his family were also held up and robbed by armed men on October 10 at their home in La Romain, following which the bandits escaped by sea.
The Crime and Problem Analysis (CAPA) unit of the T&T Police Service confirmed yesterday that there had been 451 cases of home invasions for 2022 up to October 16.
