Days before his probationary period was due to end, Kern Gardiner’s contract at Caribbean Airlines (CAL) was terminated. Gardiner worked at the state airline as the Executive Manager, Finance. According to sources, Gardiner was let go on Tuesday.
Before his stint with Caribbean Airlines, Gardiner worked as a finance manager at Heritage Petroleum. He currently sits on the Central Bank board as a director having been appointed earlier this year.
Messages to Gardiner’s cell phone since Tuesday have gone unanswered.
The move comes just weeks after his superior, Chief Financial Officer Varuna Kuarsingh, was sent on leave by the new CAL board, headed by Reyna Kowlessar. Guardian Media understands Kuarsingh’s suspension has since been extended to October 10th. Senior Cost and Financial Accounting Manager, Neera Ramai, has been acting as CFO in Kuarsingh’s place.
On August 11th, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar called for changes to be made at CAL. Citing the company’s failure to submit audited financial statements for the past nine years, Persad-Bissessar said management was failing to do their jobs.
“Not one single route of Caribbean Airlines is bringing a profit. But we are spending millions of dollars there. I am giving the management of Caribbean Airlines two years max. They have to sort out the mess. Otherwise, everyone there will have to look for a new job,” Persad-Bissessar said then.
Guardian Media reached out to both the Prime Minister and Caribbean Airlines for a comment yesterday, but there was no response.
