The two University of the West Indies (UWI) students who were arrested during a protest on the campus will be entering 2019 as criminal defendants.
The accused, Nathanael John and Brian Richards, appeared before the Tunapuna 3rd Magistrates court on Friday for their hearing.
However, due to the absence of a magistrate, the matter was adjourned. They will return before the court on February 22, 2019.
A representative of the students’ legal team, Brian Baig told Guardian Media, “The ball is in the State’s court, in that, there are certain things they need to disclose to us and we are still awaiting disclosure.”
John and Richards were both arrested on October 18, during a student-led protest to bring awareness of safety and security on the campus, on the charges of obstructing a police officer and resisting arrest.
On October 15, a second-year female student was robbed and sexually assaulted in a bloody attack, which occurred in a female washroom in the Student Activities Centre on the St Augustine campus.
The attack resulted in the Students’ Guild calling an emergency meeting with students, which morphed into the protest prompting police officers to intervene.
