Colleagues of a Coast Guard officer who was killed in a motorcycle accident early Monday turned out to comfort his relatives at the Forensic Science Centre.
Kevaughn Diaz, 36, was killed shortly after midnight on Sunday after he collided with a vehicle along the Churchill Roosevelt Highway, near Grand Bazaar.
One officer described Diaz, who served for the past 12 years in the T&T Coast Guard (TTCG), as an “exemplary officer…he was well-loved and respected by all his colleagues.” Diaz celebrated his 36th birthday on November 1.
According to a police report, Diaz was riding his Kawasaki motorbike along the Churchill Roosevelt Highway when he struck a passenger vehicle near the interchange. Diaz, who was wearing full protective gear including helmet, died on the scene, police said. An autopsy revealed that Diaz died from severe external and internal haemorrhage. He also sustained multiple fractures.
According to a release issued by the TTCG’s public affairs officer, Lt Sherron Manswell, Diaz was enlisted into the TTCG on January 2, 2006. Manswell, on behalf of the Chief of Defence Staff, Rear Admiral Hayden Pritchard, extended deepest condolences to the bereaved family. Funeral arrangements are yet to be finalised.
