A bandit was killed by police during a confrontation with officers yesterday morning, and three of his accomplices were arrested following a home invasion.
Police reported that around 3.10am, a 54-year-old businessman and his 32-year-old brother were on their way to their Eastern Main Road, Barataria home when they were ambushed.
The bandits forced the brothers into their home, beating them and demanding cash and valuables. The intruders robbed the brothers and four others who were at home, taking a cellphone and $2,500 cash from one of the brothers and a cellphone from another.
The men also robbed those at home, including an 81-year-old man of cellphones, a Sony PlayStation with controllers, and other valuables.
The men then fled through a window.
Officers of the Morvant Police Station, led by Corporals Andrews and Forbes, with Constables Brazlon, Mc Knight, Taylor, and Kissoon, responded to the report and saw a group of men running into a nearby drain.
The officers later trained their guns on a manhole exit along Second Street West, Barataria, for anyone trying to leave through there around 3.35 am.
A 25-year-old man from Production Ave, Sea Lots, was held as he came out of the manhole. Another man, who police said came out of the manhole with a loaded Smith and Wesson gun, was shot by two police officers and taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, where he was declared dead at around 4.06 am.
The deceased has only been identified as "Antonio" of Seventh Avenue, Malick.
Police also arrested a 23-year-old man and an 18-year-old, both from Seventh Avenue, Barataria, and a 23-year-old from Nelson Street, Port-of-Spain, with some of the stolen items. - Jensen La Vende
