A 29-year-old Mt Hope resident was killed by police in an alleged shootout yesterday afternoon.
According to reports, around 12.35 pm officers of the Northern Division were on patrol along Gordon Street, Mt Hope, when they saw a man acting suspiciously upon seeing them.
The officers allegedly attempted to stop the man, who reportedly responded by drawing a firearm and shooting at them. The officers returned fire and struck the man several times. He was taken to the Eric Williams Medical Science Complex but died while undergoing treatment.
The man was later identified as Addysinia Tafari, who lives in a community near to where the incident occurred. Tafari was said to be known to police.
A firearm that was allegedly found in Tafari’s possession will be taken to the Forensic Science Centre in St James to determine if it was used in any recent shootings or murders.
As with all cases of police killings, a First Division officer is expected to be assigned to investigate the incident.
