Investigators are currently receiving intelligence on several other police officers from the Port-of-Spain and North Eastern Division who are said to be allegedly linked to gang members and gang activities.
This new information surfaced during the interrogation of three police officers, currently in police custody for allegedly helping criminal gangs.
A senior police officer said that the investigation involving the three in custody are “at a sensitive stage.” Charges are expected to be laid later this week.
Police sources told Guardian Media that other police officers were being closely monitored and strongly believed to be linked to the drug and guns trade especially along the north coast.
It is believed that the officers in question allegedly have strong links with a gang leader from the Port-of-Spain area and a drug lord from North Trinidad.
On Sunday, a third police officer was held. The officer is currently suspended from duty on charges of common assault.
That officer joined two others in custody, one of whom is closely related to the former Commissioner of Police, Stephen Williams. Those two officers were detained on Friday.
Guardian Media understands that officers of the Organised Crime and Intelligence Unit (OCIU) submitted a file to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on Sunday but were instructed to re-interview the ex-commissioner’s relative before seeking further instructions.
On Sunday Williams’ relative and a 39-year-old police constable were arrested by the OCIU at the Arouca Police Station, shortly after they returned from the Tunapuna Magistrates’ Court.
The lockers of both officers were searched, their cellphones seized and their homes later searched.
The arrests come after months of surveillance of several police officers suspected of facilitating gang activity, including the transportation of narcotics and other contraband across the country.
