?Po­lice have ar­rest­ed 81 peo­ple su­us­pect­ed of var­i­ous of­fences dur­ing an ex­er­cise on Wednes­day in Ari­ma, Mal­oney and Arou­ca. A to­tal of 70 sus­pects were held on out­stand­ing war­rants in Ari­ma while sev­en oth­ers were held on drug-traf­fick­ing charges in Arou­ca. Four were nabbed in Mal­oney for rob­beries and pos­ses­sion of stolen items. The ex­er­cise was car­ried out by of­fi­cers of the North­ern Di­vi­sion CID and Task Force.

Head of the North­ern Di­vi­sion, Se­nior Supt Joseph Ed­wards, said it was part of the ef­fort by po­lice to bring crim­i­nal ac­tiv­i­ties to a man­age­able lev­el through­out the North­ern Di­vi­sion. He said the di­vi­sion would get ad­di­tion­al man­pow­er soon. He said the po­lice would con­cen­trate on the Curepe and St Au­gus­tine dis­tricts. Ed­wards said: "There has been a very se­ri­ous in­ter­ven­tion by po­lice through­out the dis­trict. "We are work­ing around the clock to en­sure law and or­der is pre­served at all times, and that busi­ness peo­ple and cit­i­zens are safe from crim­i­nal el­e­ments."
