The refusal to hand over his cellphone to a robber has led to the shooting death of a 37-year-old man on Wednesday night.
Investigators said Roger Gibson, of Sixth Avenue in Barataria, was shot multiple times by a gunman who became enraged when Gibson refused to hand over his phone. According to police, around 11.15 pm, Gibson was standing at the corner of Eight Avenue in Barataria when a gunman approached him and demanded he hand over his cellphone.
When he refused, police said, a struggle ensued, after which the gunman became angry and shot Gibson several times in the abdomen at close range. The gunman then snatched the phone from a bleeding Gibson and fled on foot. Gibson was taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt Hope, where emergency surgery was performed. Gibson, however, succumbed to his injuries around 3 am yesterday.
Up to late yesterday, officers of the North-Eastern Divisional Task Force, headed by Sgt Roger Alexander, were working along certain lines in search of the assailant. Police said they have received a description of the killer and expressed confidence that he would soon be brought to justice.
