The re­fusal to hand over his cell­phone to a rob­ber has led to the shoot­ing death of a 37-year-old man on Wednes­day night.

In­ves­ti­ga­tors said Roger Gib­son, of Sixth Av­enue in Barataria, was shot mul­ti­ple times by a gun­man who be­came en­raged when Gib­son re­fused to hand over his phone. Ac­cord­ing to po­lice, around 11.15 pm, Gib­son was stand­ing at the cor­ner of Eight Av­enue in Barataria when a gun­man ap­proached him and de­mand­ed he hand over his cell­phone.

When he re­fused, po­lice said, a strug­gle en­sued, af­ter which the gun­man be­came an­gry and shot Gib­son sev­er­al times in the ab­domen at close range. The gun­man then snatched the phone from a bleed­ing Gib­son and fled on foot. Gib­son was tak­en to the Er­ic Williams Med­ical Sci­ences Com­plex, Mt Hope, where emer­gency surgery was per­formed. Gib­son, how­ev­er, suc­cumbed to his in­juries around 3 am yes­ter­day.

Up to late yes­ter­day, of­fi­cers of the North-East­ern Di­vi­sion­al Task Force, head­ed by Sgt Roger Alexan­der, were work­ing along cer­tain lines in search of the as­sailant. Po­lice said they have re­ceived a de­scrip­tion of the killer and ex­pressed con­fi­dence that he would soon be brought to jus­tice.
