The investigation into the purported $5 million "hit" placed on the life of UNC's political leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar is expected to be completed over the weekend. Deputy Police Commissioner Gilbert Reyes gave the assurance yesterday, saying the police had already made several inroads into the probe. According to Reyes, investigators were in the process of tracing the origin of the alleged call which was made by an anonymous person on Wednesday. "We have already done a lot of groundwork and we are in the process of tracing the call which we have already made progress with," Reyes said.
He said immediately upon receiving information regarding the "hit," a team of officers was detailed and had been working to determine the source. At a public PNM meeting held at Centre City Mall in Chaguanas on Thursday night, Prime Minister Patrick Manning said he was informed by the security forces that the reported "hit" was an "entire hoax." "I am now in a position to report that they have reported to me that the entire matter was a hoax," Manning said. Asked where Manning got his information, Reyes said: "I don't know, but it was not me." "We are treating the matter like other report made to the police," he said. "We are taking it seriously until the entire matter is thoroughly investigated." He also assured that police security had been beefed up for all political meetings.
