Central Division detectives believe they have made a dent in a drug-smuggling operation, with the recovery of close to $.5 million worth of high-grade marijuana. The operation began around 10.30 pm on Saturday and ended around 2 am yesterday. It included Insps Lavia and Burke, Sgt James, Cpl Andrews and PCs Sinanan, Rambaran and Wellington. Members of the Central Robbery Unit were also involved in the exercise. Following information received, police went to a house at Thom Street in Longdenville where they seized some 39 kilos of compressed marijuana.
A 43-year-old man, who was reportedly in the house at the time of the exercise, was arrested and charged with possession of drugs. He is expected to appear before a Chaguanas magistrate today. Shortly after, the same party of officers went to another house at Santa Monica Street in St Helena where they executed a seach warrant. A .38 Taurus revolver and six rounds of ammunition were discovered and a 37-year-old man was arrested. He is also expected to appear before a Chaguanas magistrate to answer charges of illegal possession of arms and ammunition.
