Arsonists firebombed two 20-foot containers which were parked close to the abandoned Usine Ste Madeleine sugar factory on Sunday night.
Up to late last night officers were unable to say who owned the containers. According to police a security officer, employed at the site, called police to say the containers were on fire.
A team of officers from the Mon Repos Fire Headquarters visited the scene and extinguished the blaze. The containers were empty. Since the closure of the sugar industry in 2003, part of the factory has been used to refine sugar.
However, earlier this year operations stopped. Part of the site is now being used to house derelict police vehicles. Investigators said they are attempting to trace the owners of the containers to ascertain losses.
