A man nursing gunshot wounds to both legs was yesterday granted $85,000 bail to cover charges of extortion and assaulting a policeman. Unable to walk, Penal resident Shawn Jaikaran, 28, could not appear before San Fernando Magistrate Annette McKenzie in the First Court.
Instead, his attorney Kiel Taklalsingh appeared on his behalf.
Jaikaran, who was shot once with the bullet entering the right leg and then penetrating the left, remained in the cell block downstairs the courthouse. On his initial appearance on Wednesday, he arrived at the cell block via ambulance. Police prosecutor Kumar Ramlochan made arrangements for wheelchair-bound Jaikaran to appear before McKenzie in the car park area. The media was not allowed in that area.
When the matter was called yesterday, police prosecutor Sgt Rampersad said they had no objection to bail, but on the condition that Jaikaran stays away from the victim and report once a week to a police station. His attorney agreed to the terms. McKenzie said she did not think it necessary at that point to have him report to the station. She warned him, however, not to have any communication with the victims or their family.
Jaikaran was charged with assaulting PC George at La Romaine in an attempt to prevent apprehension on August 27, 2010. He was also charged with extorting $10,000 from a La Romaine family between August 27 and August 28, 2010. He was not called upon to plead to the charges, laid indictably by Insp Thomas. The matter was adjourned September 9.
