A man nurs­ing gun­shot wounds to both legs was yes­ter­day grant­ed $85,000 bail to cov­er charges of ex­tor­tion and as­sault­ing a po­lice­man. Un­able to walk, Pe­nal res­i­dent Shawn Jaikaran, 28, could not ap­pear be­fore San Fer­nan­do Mag­is­trate An­nette McKen­zie in the First Court.

In­stead, his at­tor­ney Kiel Tak­lals­ingh ap­peared on his be­half.

Jaikaran, who was shot once with the bul­let en­ter­ing the right leg and then pen­e­trat­ing the left, re­mained in the cell block down­stairs the cour­t­house. On his ini­tial ap­pear­ance on Wednes­day, he ar­rived at the cell block via am­bu­lance. Po­lice pros­e­cu­tor Ku­mar Ram­lochan made arrange­ments for wheel­chair-bound Jaikaran to ap­pear be­fore McKen­zie in the car park area. The me­dia was not al­lowed in that area.

When the mat­ter was called yes­ter­day, po­lice pros­e­cu­tor Sgt Ram­per­sad said they had no ob­jec­tion to bail, but on the con­di­tion that Jaikaran stays away from the vic­tim and re­port once a week to a po­lice sta­tion. His at­tor­ney agreed to the terms. McKen­zie said she did not think it nec­es­sary at that point to have him re­port to the sta­tion. She warned him, how­ev­er, not to have any com­mu­ni­ca­tion with the vic­tims or their fam­i­ly.

Jaikaran was charged with as­sault­ing PC George at La Ro­maine in an at­tempt to pre­vent ap­pre­hen­sion on Au­gust 27, 2010. He was al­so charged with ex­tort­ing $10,000 from a La Ro­maine fam­i­ly be­tween Au­gust 27 and Au­gust 28, 2010. He was not called up­on to plead to the charges, laid in­dictably by In­sp Thomas. The mat­ter was ad­journed Sep­tem­ber 9.
