A Cus­toms and Ex­cise of­fi­cer will ap­pear be­fore an Ari­ma mag­is­trate to­day on charges of reck­less and drunk­en dri­ving. A re­port said the of­fi­cer, of cen­tral Trinidad, struck a 12-year-old boy who was walk­ing along the Pi­ar­co Main Road, Pi­ar­co Vil­lage, on Sat­ur­day night.

The boy was hit by a wing mir­ror on the ve­hi­cle. Po­lice said the Cus­toms of­fi­cer was giv­en a breathal­yser test which read 108, the le­gal lim­it be­ing 35. The ve­hi­cle was lat­er im­pound­ed by the Pi­ar­co po­lice. The dri­ver was tak­en to the Arou­ca Po­lice Sta­tion where he re­mained in cus­tody up to late yes­ter­day evening.

The con­di­tion of the boy was not clear, po­lice said. Mean­while, an­oth­er dri­ver will ap­pear to­day be­fore an Ari­ma mag­is­trate charged with drunk­en dri­ving. He was held on Fri­day by Pi­ar­co po­lice. Po­lice said the dri­ver and two oth­er rel­a­tives were in the ve­hi­cle on the com­pound of the Pi­ar­co In­ter­na­tion­al Air­port.
