Death toll expected to rise as fires rage through Los Angeles

Fire­fight­ers are bat­tling to con­trol a se­ries of ma­jor fires in the Los An­ge­les area that have killed five peo­ple, rav­aged com­mu­ni­ties from the Pa­cif­ic Coast to Pasade­na and forced over 180,000 peo­ple to flee their homes.

What to know:

Wind con­di­tions: Fe­ro­cious, blaze-fan­ning winds have calmed some­what to­day, but the Na­tion­al Weath­er Ser­vice warned that the wind is ex­pect­ed to strength­en this evening.

Fire map: The Pal­isades fire, near the coast, has burned about 26.9 square miles (69.8 square kilo­me­tres). The Eaton fire, north of Pasade­na, has burned about 16.6 square miles (43 square kilo­me­tres). And the Hurst fire, in the San Fer­nan­do Val­ley, has burned 1.3 square miles (3.4 square kilo­me­tres). The Sun­set fire in the Hol­ly­wood Hills has burned less than a square mile.

Out­ages and evac­u­a­tions: Rough­ly 400,000 cus­tomers statewide were with­out pow­er as of Thurs­day, ac­cord­ing to the track­er Power­Outage.us. Near­ly 180,000 res­i­dents are un­der evac­u­a­tion or­ders, per of­fi­cials.
