The Point Lisas Desalination Plant was restarted at 2 pm on Tuesday following an unplanned shutdown and began producing at a flow rate of ten million imperial gallons daily (10 mgd).
Repair works are ongoing and production will be increased incrementally to full production of 40 mgd as the work is completed.
Until then, the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) will continue to re-distribute water supplies from its Caroni and Navet Water Treatment Plants to supplement the flows from the desalination plant.
That plant, operated by the Desalination Company of T&T (DESALCOTT), normally supplies 40 million gallons of water a day for the Point Lisas Industrial Estate and supplements the supply in central south and west Trinidad.
The shutdown significantly affected WASA’s distribution capacity.
Customers in central and south Trinidad who were affected by the shutdown are encouraged to manage their water use efficiently, since it may take up to 24 hours for pipe borne water supply schedules to result once operations at the Plant are regularised.
