A Sangre Grande doubles vendor is now warded in serious condition at Eric Williams Medical Science Complex, Mt Hope, after he was beaten and stabbed by four men early yesterday.
Police said around 5.15 am yesterday, Avinash Singh was selling doubles at the Open Shops at the corner of Cunapo Southern Main Road and Eastern Main Road, Sangre Grande, when four men arrived to purchase doubles at Singh’s outlet. The men ordered doubles but Singh was attending to other customers. The men asked Singh if he did not hear what they were saying. He told them he did but noted that they had to wait their turn as he was almost finishing the orders of customers who were before them.
An argument began between Singh and the four men and soon afterwards they ran into his booth and began to beat him. One of the men took a beer bottle he had in his hand and began beat Singh on his head. He then broke the bottle and stabbed Singh on his head, while the others showered blows on the vendor.
Customers who fled the scene called the police on their cellphones. The men soon fled, leaving Singh bleeding from his injuries.
Police and an EHS ambulance crew arrived on the scene a few minutes later. Singh was placed in the ambulance and taken to the Sangre Grande District Hospital, where he received medical attention before transferred to the EWMSC.
Visiting the scene were officers attached to Sangre Grande CID, who searched for men but could not find them. However, from the descriptions of the men given by eyewitnesses, police believed they will be able to make arrests soon.
WPC Reyes of Sangre Grande CID is continuing investigation.
