El Carmen river overflows as advisory warns of flooding risk

As of 9am on Mon­day, 19 May 2025, the Min­istry of Rur­al De­vel­op­ment and Lo­cal Gov­ern­ment is warn­ing of pos­si­ble lo­calised flood­ing due to high tide and slow runoff.

In a state­ment, the Min­istry said, “Riv­er Lev­el Ad­vi­so­ry Mon­day 19th May 2025 as of 9:00 am. Lo­calised flood­ing is to be ex­pect­ed as we are cur­rent­ly ex­pe­ri­enc­ing high tide, and runoff will be slow. The pub­lic is urged to take cau­tion.”

The lat­est riv­er lev­els across the coun­try are as fol­lows:

El Car­men (Ca­roni Riv­er) – 103% ca­pac­i­ty (over­flow­ing)

Ca­roni (Bam­boo Set­tle­ment #3) – 73% ca­pac­i­ty

Ca­roni Tumpuna – 88% ca­pac­i­ty

South Oropouche – 67% ca­pac­i­ty

Manuel Con­go – 50% ca­pac­i­ty

North Oropouche (To­co Road) – 47% ca­pac­i­ty

Arou­ca – 34% ca­pac­i­ty

Cunu­pia Riv­er – 38% ca­pac­i­ty

Diego Mar­tin Riv­er – 27% ca­pac­i­ty

Cau­ra Riv­er – 32% ca­pac­i­ty

Guaracara – 15% ca­pac­i­ty

San Juan Riv­er – 14% ca­pac­i­ty

Cipero Riv­er – 6% ca­pac­i­ty

Cou­va Riv­er – 7% ca­pac­i­ty

Mar­aval Riv­er – 10% ca­pac­i­ty

The Min­istry re­mind­ed the pub­lic to con­tact their re­spec­tive Dis­as­ter Man­age­ment Units for up­dates and as­sis­tance.
