The Equal Opportunity Commission (Commission/EOC) congratulated the Vice-Chair of EOC Dr. Gabrielle Hosein on her receipt of the Medal for the Development of Women, gold, in the spheres of public education and advocacy.
The following is a press release from the EOC:
The Equal Opportunity Commission (Commission/EOC) extends warm congratulations to EOC Vice-Chair Dr. Gabrielle Hosein on her receipt of the Medal for the Development of Women, gold, in the spheres of public education and advocacy.
Dr. Hosein is a Senior Lecturer at the Institute for Gender and Development Studies at the University of the West Indies, St Augustine and has been a fierce advocate in the Caribbean feminist movement for over twenty-five years.
Dr. Hosein credits the contributions and battles of the activists before her that laid the foundation for her to build on. She said "women have a role to play in transforming public life to create greater equality and inclusion. There has also been significant work by women over the past fifty years to ensure that women's rights are considered an essential part of national development. Each of us has a responsibility to continue that struggle, following in the footsteps of so much which has been accomplished while remaining committed to work which we must still do."
A loving and supportive network of feminists and activists was credited for enabling Dr. Hosein to get involved, learn and lead. Dr Hosein, in turn, hopes that she can, “continue to mentor, nurture and encourage others, especially my UWI students and young activists, to live in solidarity with those who need them on their side.”
EOC Chairman Ian Roach said, “we are proud of Gabrielle’s achievement. The same commitment, passion and resolve she brings to her advocacy efforts for gender justice and the LGBTI+ community, she brings to the EOC, and we congratulate her on this much deserved national award and acknowledgement for her work.”
