Serious concerns are now being raised as to what really happened last week Saturday along the Priority Bus Route (PBR) in El Dorado where Leroy Calliste, 64, was fatally struck by a white Lexus motor car.
Calliste was a Director at DFL Caribbean Holdings Limited. He also held the position of a consultant (from 2009 to up until his death) at RBC Financial (Caribbean) Limited. He was also a former Group Financial Comptroller at RBC Financial (Caribbean) Limited (1995-2009) and formerly the Financial Comptroller at the First Citizens Bank (1977-1995). He was also the Treasurer and Council Member of the T&T Group of Professional Associations Limited.
According to a police report, issued in a release by the T&T Police Service, Calliste was killed at about 5.45 pm on October 6 as he was riding his bicycle along the PBR in the vicinity of WASA, El Dorado when he was struck by a white Lexus motor vehicle. Police, however, chose to withhold the identity of the Lexus’ driver. The police report stated that the driver of the Lexus told police investigators that he was proceeding east along the PBR behind a small red band maxi taxi when on reaching the vicinity of WASA, the maxi taxi pulled to the left onto the shoulder and stopped.
The driver alleged that as he was about to pass the maxi taxi, Calliste rode out from in front of the maxi taxi onto the lane and “came into contact with his vehicle.”
Calliste died on the scene. The report added that the driver told police that the maxi taxi then drove off.
However, information reaching the T&T Guardian suggested that there seems to be a “major cover-up” into what happened that day. Photographs taken from the scene that evening showed Calliste’s body inside the Lexus vehicle.
It is believed that upon impact, allegedly by full speed, caused Calliste to be thrown in the air and landing on the Lexus’ windshield smashing it and with him collapsing into the vehicle. Calliste sustained severe injuries to the head, torso, arms and legs. He also sustained multiple broken bones. In that said press release issued the TTPS called on eye-witnesses “to come forward and identify a red band maxi taxi and its driver, which left the scene of a road traffic accident.”
However, sources close to Calliste, who wished strict anonymity, said that they strongly believe that it is a major cover-up and there is “reason” why the identity of the Lexus was not disclosed. “It seems as though the driver may be someone of importance or connected too by relation to someone of importance.
“We, the close friends of Leroy, who was a complete gentleman to all, are also questioning if that driver had permission to be on the PBR. We believe that there were many more eyewitnesses and we want everyone to come forward. We are looking for justice,” one of Calliste’s friends said.
Calliste’s funeral will be held on Monday at 11 am at the St Aidan’s Anglican Church, Eastern Main Road, Arouca, followed by a private cremation. Investigations are continuing.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the police at 999, 555, 911 or the nearest police station.
