The body of a 45-year-old man was found floating at Pigeon Point beach around midday yesterday.
The deceased has been identified as Ravi Seelochan, who lived with his former in-laws at Store Bay Local Road, Tobago.
Videos posted on social media showed a lifeguard jumping from a jet ski to retrieve the body.
According to reports, the father of four was last seen heavily intoxicated while liming at No Man’s Land on Saturday.
His former mother-in-law, Pamela Kissoon, told Guardian Media that Seelochan was a very kind and loving person.
However, she said he had a drinking problem, which contributed to his separation from her daughter. Despite the issue, she stressed that Seelochan was always respectful to the family.
“He was a quiet person, although he used to drink alcohol a lot,” she said.
“He was always respectful. Even though he drink, he was never disrespectful to us.”
Kissoon said the family treated Seelochan well and allowed him to stay on the compound with them.
“He told me he could not afford a rent. He had a loan to pay and other expenses.
“My son would cook every day for him and treat him like normal.”
However, she said there was a court hearing last week concerning the separation and custody of their children.
During a recent conversation with Seelochan, Kissoon said he appeared apprehensive about the future.
“He did mention how important his children was to him. He has girl children and he was a bit cautious about, you know, when fathers aren’t around. They’re from 14 years go down. He was cautious about that, knowing he isn’t there.”
Seelochan and Kissoon’s daughter have three girls and one boy.
She said the family would rally around her daughter and the children in his absence.
Police are investigating the incident.
