Tragedy struck off Icacos Village in Cedros yesterday after a fisherman died when a fishing pirogue capsized at sea.
The deceased has been identified as John Grant, 61, of Icacos Village, who was fondly called Johnny.
Reports indicate that three fishermen were about half a mile from shore after 1 pm when their boat overturned while they were hauling in a net filled with debris.
It is believed the vessel became overburdened, and a wave then struck, capsizing the pirogue.
Grant attempted to swim to shore but drowned due to the rough sea, despite being able to swim. The two other fishermen, known as “Shoes” and “Bake,” managed to cling to the overturned vessel and were later rescued.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
