Police have detained five more suspects as they continue their investigation into the murder of Police Constable Kryston Ramirez.
The arrests of the five additional suspects have been confirmed by defence attorney Fareed Ali who is looking after the interest of those detained.
The suspects, ages 27 to 38 were nabbed by investigating officers at random places throughout the East-West corridor.
On Monday, the officers detained a 20-year-old man and a 16-year-old who they believe can assist with the probe.
The suspects are to be placed on identification parades.
According to a police report, at about 2.30 pm on Sunday two masked men entered the Classy Bar at Carapo Main Road, Arima, where Ramirez was working his second job.
One of the suspects, who was armed with a gun, pointed it at Ramirez and fatally shot him. Both men then escaped.
Ali said yesterday that despite the efforts of the police all the suspects have exercised their right to silence and have left the police to strict proof of their involvement.
Ali said his clients have nothing to prove to investigators and will not be voluntarily participating in any process the police choose to engage any of them in.
He also claimed that his clients have been denied baths and meals for the past 36 hours. He said this is a clear breach of his clients’ constitutional rights and privileges which they are entitled to within the law.
Meanwhile, Ramirez’s funeral has been delayed due to the unavailabilityof flights for both his parents and siblings who live in the United States.
This was yesterday confirmed by a relative who said: “This is the only set back being it is Christmas time and there are no flights so the funeral may be some time next week.”
Meanwhile, the two suspects who were arrested in connection with his murder on Tuesday, remain in police custody yesterday assisting with the investigations. No charges were laid up to late yesterday.
According to a police report, the two men were among 13 arrested during the exercise that was conducted in the Carapo and Peytonville areas overnight on Monday.
