Days after the decomposing body of security guard Chris Rivers was discovered in the bushy area in Mayaro, her estranged boyfriend has been charged with her murder.
The 26-year-old security guard of Union Village, Mayaro, is expected to appear in the Mayaro Magistrates Court on Monday. He was charged by PC Gillead on Saturday following instructions from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The suspect was arrested days after Rivers’ went on July 8.
She disappeared after leaving her workplace at WASA substation, New Grant.
Rivers, of Al Guanapo Estate, Rio Claro, called her mother and told her she was going to take a taxi to come home, but never made it home.
Her mother, Rosyln, and other relatives called her cellphone several times but got no response. They, together with the police and members of the public, also went to various areas in search of her.
Last Monday, a week after she went missing, the suspect’s girlfriend led police to a forested area in Mafeking Village, Mayaro, where Rivers’ body was found. It was in an advanced stage of decomposition and clad in the clothes Rivers was wearing when she left her work on July 8.
Rivers’ mother said her daughter had ended an abusive relationship with her boyfriend last year but was still living in fear. They were in a relationship for four years. Hundreds of mourners attended Rivers funeral service on Friday.
Following which she was buried at the Lapeyrouse Public Cemetery in Rio Claro. Investigations into the murder were supervised by ASP Shaun Dhilpaul of Homicide Bureau Region 2 and included Sgt Toussiant and Cpl Bennet.
