A former cashier who is accused of carrying out an armed robbery at her former workplace, an NP Quick Shoppe, has been denied bail.
Vidya Alfred, 26, appeared in the San Fernando Magistrates Court on Thursday but was remanded into custody to reappear Friday for her attorney to respond to submissions by the prosecution that under the new Bail Amendment Act she was not entitled to bail. Alfred was not brought down from prison to the court yesterday. However, her attorney Frank Gittens agreed that under the new law she is not entitled to bail until the expiration of 120 days.
Alfred has no previous convictions or pending matters.
She is jointly charged with Tevin Babb, 28.
It is alleged that on August 6 armed with a firearm they robbed Rennelle Baksh, an employee at the Quick Shoppe at Rushworth Street, San Fernando, of $120,000.
Alfred was not asked to plead to the charge which was laid by WPC Bobcombe.
Prosecutor Ramdath Phillip had submitted on Thursday that once a firearm is used in the commission of an offence even if the person charged was not in possession of the firearm that person is not entitled to bail.
He said the prosecution will be relying on CCTV footage as part of the evidence.
Babb was also denied bail on a similar charge earlier this week. Senior Magistrate Jo-Anne Connor adjourned the matter to December 17 when Babb is also expected to reappear.
