A 58-year-old man died while try­ing to ex­tin­guish a fire at his Freeport home on Wednes­day night.

Po­lice said res­i­dents of Siew­dass Road, Freeport heard a crack­ing noise at around 8.15 pm and on check­ing saw the home of Dhan­paul Ma­habir on fire.

Res­i­dents told po­lice that Ma­habir tried to ex­tin­guish the blaze but was not suc­cess­ful.

He was then seen go­ing in­to the build­ing.

One of Ma­habir's rel­a­tives who lived near the prop­er­ty pulled him from the burn­ing house as he was slip­ping in and out of con­scious­ness.

Fire of­fi­cers were called in and are con­tin­u­ing en­quiries.
