Costly blimp had to go—Dookeran

Government decided “sometime ago” that the blimp (Skyship 600) would not be part of its strategic security plan. According to acting Prime Minister Winston Dookeran, the decision to sell the blimp was not made in haste. When questioned about the sale at the post-Cabinet news briefing yesterday at the Office of the Prime Minister, St Clair, Dookeran said it was costly to keep the blimp. News reports stated it would be sold for US$50,000. This was not disputed by Dookeran.
It was bought by the previous administration for US$15 million.

Dookern said “sometime ago” it was indicated that the blimp would not be part of Government’s security strategic plan “for reasons that are very clear to those in the field of intelligence.” He added: “Keeping it there without having it disposed was costly business and was costing us a fair amount during the course of the year. “Having gone through the bidding process, it is regrettable that only a few people were so interested but it was more economical for us at this point to accede to the bidding process and since it was not going to be part of the strategic security plan it was not required.”
