Scores of commuters travelling between Port-of-Spain and Arima were stranded at City Gate from as early as 4 pm yesterday. Commuters complained that everytime it rained it was the norm for transportation to become difficult. Others said there was no presence of police at City Gate and this compounded the chaotic
situation.
Zaid Mohammed said overcrowding at City Gate when it rains should not be repeated. "Everytime rain falls there are these problems
of crowd at City Gate.Over the years you must have had a proper planning system to alleviate these type of problems," he said. Ralph Roberts said,"When you see a maxi in the stand you see them off-loading but you are not seeing them taking up anyone to go anywhere." And Hannah Maraj said it was not very often that chaos at the City Gate occurs. She said it was the worst she has seen in a long time.
Port-of-Spain Mayor Murchison Brown said he was not surprised that commuters attempting to get out of the city have encountered
problems. "I heard the news of problems for transportation,
and I am not surprised. Based on the reports about flooding obviously transport will be impeded. Maxi-taxis will take long to
get in and out of the city," he said.
