Scores of com­muters trav­el­ling be­tween Port-of-Spain and Ari­ma were strand­ed at City Gate from as ear­ly as 4 pm yes­ter­day. Com­muters com­plained that every­time it rained it was the norm for trans­porta­tion to be­come dif­fi­cult. Oth­ers said there was no pres­ence of po­lice at City Gate and this com­pound­ed the chaot­ic

sit­u­a­tion.

Zaid Mo­hammed said over­crowd­ing at City Gate when it rains should not be re­peat­ed. "Every­time rain falls there are these prob­lems

of crowd at City Gate.Over the years you must have had a prop­er plan­ning sys­tem to al­le­vi­ate these type of prob­lems," he said. Ralph Roberts said,"When you see a maxi in the stand you see them off-load­ing but you are not see­ing them tak­ing up any­one to go any­where." And Han­nah Maraj said it was not very of­ten that chaos at the City Gate oc­curs. She said it was the worst she has seen in a long time.

Port-of-Spain May­or Murchi­son Brown said he was not sur­prised that com­muters at­tempt­ing to get out of the city have en­coun­tered

prob­lems. "I heard the news of prob­lems for trans­porta­tion,

and I am not sur­prised. Based on the re­ports about flood­ing ob­vi­ous­ly trans­port will be im­ped­ed. Maxi-taxis will take long to

get in and out of the city," he said.
