?The Deb­bie Ali kid­nap­ping case is far from closed and the mat­ter is still un­der in­ves­ti­ga­tion, Deputy Po­lice Com­mis­sion­er Gilbert Reyes dis­closed last Wednes­day. Reyes, re­spond­ing to ques­tions from the Sun­day Guardian about the re­port­ed clo­sure of the case, said, "The case is not closed. It is still open. The po­lice are still do­ing in­ves­ti­ga­tions. In fact, we are work­ing on some leads in the mat­ter at this time."

Reyes ad­mit­ted that the po­lice some­times do not do "fol­low-up" work in in­form­ing crime sur­vivors on how their mat­ters are pro­ceed­ing and as­sured, "I am go­ing to call the An­ti-Kid­nap­ping Unit (AKU) and have them go to Ali and up­date her on the case." Ali was kid­napped from her Roys­to­nia, Cou­va home, on De­cem­ber 5, 2006, and, to date, no one has been held in con­nec­tion with the crime. Reyes com­mend­ed Ali for "be­ing a very brave la­dy" and said her speak­ing out open­ly about her or­deal has giv­en the po­lice hope.
