Flooding, because of heavy showers and thundershowers, should be expected today, as thousands of voters throughout T&T seek to cast their votes. This warning was sent out by the T&T Meteorological Service yesterday, in an official "election day weather alert". "Having regard to our country's election day on May 24, all citizens are advised to plan their activities and movements with due care and consideration, given forecasted weather conditions as they exercise their democratic rights. "Disruptions owing to localised flooding, consequent upon heavy showers or thundershowers, should be expected. "As such, citizens should prepare for this possible eventuality."
The Met Office said some parts of South and Central Trinidad received moderate to heavy rainfall since 4 am yesterday, as a result of the visit of the inter-tropical convergence zone. A release said 28.3 mm of "considerable" rainfall was recorded. The ITCZ was expected to linger over T&T another 12 to 18 hours. "This could translate into variable cloudy to overcast skies, with periods of rain/showers and the isolated thundershower. "The time frame of occurrence for this anticipated rainfall activity would coincide with pre and official times of election day polling," the release said. The Met Office is monitoring closely this weather situation, and will issue further alerts if warranted.
