The preliminary results from the general election have revealed that 69.45 per cent of the electorate exercised their franchise on Monday. The number of registered voters was 1,040,127. Chief elections officer of the Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC) Howard Cayenne said the number of people who cast their ballots was 722,322. The People's Partnership (PP) which emerged victorious received 432,026 votes which accounted for 59.81 per cent of the electorate.
The PP won the election by a landslide, having copped 29 of the 41 seats. Of the 722,322 voters, 308,541 people voted for the UNC, which was 42.7 per cent of the electorate. The COP received 15 per cent of the total, which meant 108,143 voters while 15,342 went to the TOP, 1,998 for the New National Vision and 349 for other. There were 2,595 rejected ballots. In the 2007 general election, the COP received some 148,000 votes, while 194,425 went to the UNC.
On Monday, the People's National Movement secured 285,354 which was 39.5 per cent of the votes, copping 12 seats. In the previous election, the PNM amassed 299,813 votes. A review of the total number of votes cast showed the highest number of electors was in the Couva North constituency, while the lowest was in Port-of-Spain South. The number of electors was 21,386 and 13,029, respectively. However, the highest percentage of votes cast was 78.99 per cent in Chaguanas West, with 20,313 votes cast out of 25,715. The lowest percentage was in Laventille West with 51.25 per cent and 13,494 voters out of 26,330.
Diego Martin West had the highest number of registered voters�28,366 and Tobago East the least with 20,424. When combined, the two Tobago seats totalled 44,098 with 27,878 electors exercising their franchise. The PNM won the Arouca/Maloney seat with highest number of votes out of its 12 seats�11,476, while the PP copped Chaguanas West with 18,767 votes. The COP received its highest votes in the St Augustine constituency with 15,166 votes. Former prime minister Patrick Manning won his San Fernando East seat with 9,736 votes. There were 22,812 registered voters in that constituency. The COP's Carol Cuffy-Dowlat was defeated, having recceived 6,109 votes.
