A police officer assigned to the Witness Protection Programme is at the centre of a high-level probe after he reportedly ran away and "left behind" a police issued machine-gun. Police sources said that on Saturday night, the officer was in an unmarked police vehicle when he went to a lonely, poorly-lit road in south Trinidad "to turn." He was the only occupant.
It is reported that a man armed with stones began pelting at the car. The officer then came out of the car and fled the scene, leaving the weapon behind. Statements were taken from the officer and up to late yesterday afternoon, searches were being conducted for the gun. Yesterday, Deputy Police Commissioner Stephen Williams said he had no comment on the matter. (GK)
