A po­lice of­fi­cer as­signed to the Wit­ness Pro­tec­tion Pro­gramme is at the cen­tre of a high-lev­el probe af­ter he re­port­ed­ly ran away and "left be­hind" a po­lice is­sued ma­chine-gun. Po­lice sources said that on Sat­ur­day night, the of­fi­cer was in an un­marked po­lice ve­hi­cle when he went to a lone­ly, poor­ly-lit road in south Trinidad "to turn." He was the on­ly oc­cu­pant.

It is re­port­ed that a man armed with stones be­gan pelt­ing at the car. The of­fi­cer then came out of the car and fled the scene, leav­ing the weapon be­hind. State­ments were tak­en from the of­fi­cer and up to late yes­ter­day af­ter­noon, search­es were be­ing con­duct­ed for the gun. Yes­ter­day, Deputy Po­lice Com­mis­sion­er Stephen Williams said he had no com­ment on the mat­ter. (GK)
