120 casual and temporary workers with the Siparia Regional Corporation are expected to be given the axe on Monday.
Chairman of the SRC Dr Glenn Ramadharsingh said the regional body has no choice since there is not enough monies in the coffers to pay workers a total of $80,000 in wages for the fortnight.
Ramadharsingh said the CEO of the SRC has prepared the termination letters and it would be given to the unlucky workers on Monday. Ramadharsingh said the administrative arm of the SRC met on Thursday to come up with solutions including the application for an emergency fund from the Ministry of Local government to bail out the workers. However, Ramadharsingh said this plan was not successful. He said the council would be having an emergency meetinng on Monday at 9 am to discuss this latest predicament. He said the council had been starved for funds by Central Government and he appealed to the Prime Minister to intervene to no avail.
