Six fishermen were attacked by gunmen at sea, off Icacos Bay in Cedros, on Thursday.
The fishermen were in two pirogues about three-quarters of a mile off the coast.
One pirogue was captained by Sanjay Mahase, 48, with three other fishermen onboard, while the other boat held two other fishermen and its captain, Darren Ramdeen.
According to a report, around 6 am, a white vessel with a 200HP Yamaha engine, occupied by six men armed with guns, approached the fishermen’s vessels, which had been tied alongside a Heritage vessel.
The suspects—said to be a local and five Venezuelans—announced a robbery.
Afraid for their lives, all the fishermen except one, managed to escape onto the Heritage vessel. Reports are the bandits left with the pirogue belonging to Sanjay Mahase, which was fitted with a $75,000 75HP engine. They also took the boat captained by Darren Ramdeen and his boat.
The fishermen who had fled to the Heritage vessel were rescued and taken to the Heritage Point Fortin Base.
Police later received information that Darren Ramdeen had managed to return home with his vessel. He was said to be in good health.
Sgt Harripersad of the Cedros Police Station is the investigating officer.
