The housing allocation for the 2026-2027 budget increased to $904 million ($0.904 billion), however few details are available on what new programes, incentives, or initiatives are underway within the sector.
Housing received the lowest allocation of all sectors outlined in the budget for a second consecutive year.
The sector, however received a noticeable increase from it's allocation of $662 million ($0.662 billion) from fiscal 2026, when several plans were highlighted, including he creation of 20,000 affordable homes and firs-time homeowner grants.
During last year's budget Tancoo described housing as a "social necessity and an economic driver," as he at the time said he anticipated a "doubling" in the number of home improvement grants to be delivered.
On Monday, Tancoo mentioned the housing sector, but did not provide any specific information on any developments in the Ministry.
"There's a lot of information... a lot of activity happening in housing and home ownership and the Honourable Minister of Housing will say more on these initiatives."
In the Budget statement which was shared with Guardian Media Ltd, revitalising the housing sector was described as a "critical aspect" of the government's wider strategy in rebuilding the economy.
It outlined the construction of affordable homes as a primary objective while supporting opportunities to stimulate economic activities, employment creation, increasing demands for local building material, professional services, while supporting small contractors and the development of new communities.
"Fiscal 2027 will see increased activity in the home construction sector via a combination of Public Private Partnerships and State funded projects," the statement read.
Opposition leader Pennelope Beckles was critical of the government's lack of information, as she responded to the Budget during the Opposition's media briefing.
"Where is housing?
"This was a government that promised 500 houses a week. You would think that because of the housing sector... the housing sector results in employment and every particular industry in the country is impacted when you talk about housing and not a single word, save and except to say what is the allocation."
