The Children’s Authority (CA) is reminding parents to take extra precautions with their children during the holiday season.
Saying that children are more vulnerable to predators during vacation periods when they are out of school, the authority urged parents to be vigilant.
In a release issued today, the authority gave the following tips on child safety during the festive season:
• Supervise children when attending events, whether at the mall or a family gathering.
• Be aware of the various tactics perpetrators may use to lure children, which may include giving gifts, treats, money, or even using pets or animals to gain their attention and trust.
• Ensure children attend age appropriate events
• Do not give children alcohol to drink
• Teenagers should be taught about the dangers of alcohol consumption and illicit drugs.
• Teach children what is an appropriate and an inappropriate touch and inform them never to keep inappropriate touching a secret.
• Educate children about on-line safety and the sites they should not visit.
• Monitor their online activities, use parental control Apps designed to protect children from inappropriate content that may pop-up while they are on-line.
• Ensure children are left in the care of trusted and responsible adults.
• Believe children when they express a concern about someone.
The authority is also urging parents to develop close relationships with their children, so the children feel comfortable confiding in them.
