The La Brea Police Youth Club has completed its ‘Solar Voltaic Hydroponic project’. The project consisted of implementing grow boxes, solar powered hydroponics and a rain water harvesting system in a space awarded to the group by the National Trust of Trinidad and Tobago. The ‘Solar Voltaic Hydroponic project’ is a flagship initiative for the youth club and part of their commitment to steer its youth members towards food security.
Last year the Digicel Foundation committed TT$1million towards EPIC projects to commemorate its 10 year anniversary. La Brea Police Youth Club received TT$100,000 out of that investment to implement this EPIC project. Wrapping up 2022, with approximately 225 persons present, the group unveiled the project at an opening ceremony for the south-based youth club. The community is excited for the potential of the initiative as the group has plans to participate in the Christmas Community Farmers’ Market and inspire a new generation of agro-entrepreneurs.
Mc Donald Jacob – Commissioner of Police, Assistant Commissioner of Police Collis Hazel and MP Steven Mc Clashie were all in attendance.
Commenting on the project, Ag Cpl Jasmine Vesprey – David, Leader of the La Brea Police Youth Club said, “This has been an overwhelming experience especially to see the project come to fruition and to know of all the support we received. She added, “This is a meaningful initiative for the community, not to mention a porotype for other youth clubs.” In closing she reiterated that it was necessary to ensure that the project remained sustainable and that the community and group continue to receive support from other corporate sponsors to do consistent training.
