A 20-year-old man from Long­denville was killed af­ter be­ing hit by a car while at­tempt­ing to cross the Sir Solomon Ho­choy High­way in Ch­agua­nas, ear­ly yes­ter­day morn­ing.

Ac­cord­ing to re­ports, around 12.50 am, Bri­an Lal­la and his 18-year-old broth­er Je­re­mi­ah Ma­haraj, both of Cashew Gar­dens, Long­denville, were at­tempt­ing to cross the high­way near Mid-Cen­tre Mall.

The sib­lings were re­turn­ing home af­ter lim­ing to­geth­er at a bar where they con­sumed sev­er­al al­co­holic bev­er­ages.

Lal­la was struck by a Nis­san Almera while cross­ing the north-bound lane, while his broth­er es­caped un­scathed.

He was tak­en to Ch­agua­nas Dis­trict Health Fa­cil­i­ty but died while re­ceiv­ing treat­ment.

The 39-year-old dri­ver of the ve­hi­cle from St Mary’s Vil­lage, South Oropouche, stopped to ren­der as­sis­tance.

He told po­lice of­fi­cers that Lal­la ran in­to his ve­hi­cle’s path and he could not slow down or swerve to avoid col­lid­ing with him.

The dri­ver was re­leased by po­lice pend­ing fur­ther in­ves­ti­ga­tions.
