A po­lice con­sta­ble es­caped with his life dur­ing a shoot­ing last night in St Ann's af­ter a bul­let from ban­dits struck his walkie-talkie.

The in­ci­dent around 11.05 pm, oc­curred at Fondes Aman­des.

Of­fi­cers of the Joint Op­er­a­tions Task Force were on mo­bile pa­trol when they re­ceived a re­port that armed men were seen in the St Ann's area.

The par­ty of of­fi­cers in­clud­ing PCs Mc Al­is­ter and Mar­shall along with sol­diers George re­spond­ed.

It was claimed that up­on ar­rival, the law­men spot­ted a group of men who ran to­wards a forest­ed area.

As the of­fi­cers gave chase, one of the sus­pects al­leged­ly fired at them.

PC Mc Al­is­ter who was wear­ing a bul­let­proof vest with a walkie-talkie at­tached, was struck.

The bul­let struck the walkie talkie which pre­vent­ed fur­ther pen­e­tra­tion.

The of­fi­cers re­turned fire and sum­moned back up. Mem­bers of the Port-of-Spain Task Force and the In­ter-Agency Task Force re­spond­ed and the area was searched but the as­sailants were not found.

How­ev­er, they re­cov­ered a loaded re­volver.

PC Mc Al­is­ter was tak­en to hos­pi­tal where he was treat­ed for mi­nor bruis­ing on the left side of his tor­so un­der the left rib cage.

He was lat­er dis­charged in a sta­ble con­di­tion.

ASP Nar­ine along with In­sp Brath­waite and PCs Phillip and Cyril vis­it­ed the scene.
