A 72-year-old Cunupia man accused of stabbing his police officer daughter while intoxicated has been ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.
John Lewis, of Southern Main Road, Cunupia, was remanded to the St Ann’s Psychiatric Hospital for assessment when he appeared in court yesterday afternoon on a charge of attempted murder.
The charge arises from an incident at Lewis’s home on March 28, which he shares with his daughter, Khalia.
According to reports, an argument broke out after Lewis had consumed alcohol. He allegedly grabbed a knife and stabbed his daughter, who was off duty at the time.
She was taken for medical treatment, while Lewis was arrested.
Lewis was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge when he appeared before High Court Master Rhea Libert.
State attorney Avion Hoppie objected to bail, noting that Lewis resides with the victim.
Defence attorneys Shiva Boodoo and Roshni Balkaran requested the psychiatric evaluation, which may be taken into account when bail is reconsidered at a later hearing.
Master Libert granted the request, citing concerns about Lewis’s ability to participate in the proceedings due to his age and an advanced prostate cancer diagnosis.
Lewis is expected to reappear in court for a status hearing on July 9.
