A 39-year-old Diego Martin man drowned while fishing at Macqueripe Bay yesterday.
According to reports, around 10.35 am, Sherwyn Wilson, of Covigne Road, was fishing on rocks at the right side of the beach when he slipped and fell into the water.
Lifeguards on duty at the beach reportedly contacted the T&T Coast Guard and swam to meet bathers who saw what transpired and were holding on to Wilson until help arrived.
Coast Guard personnel responded to the scene, retrieved Wilson and unsuccessfully attempted to resuscitate him.
Wilson was taken to the Coast Guard’s Staubles Bay headquarters, where he was pronounced dead by a District Medical Officer (DMO) and identified by his identification card that was found among his personal effects.
Investigations are continuing.
In an unrelated incident, five fishermen were rescued by the crew of a Bahamian vessel after their boat sank off the south-west coast of Tobago early yesterday morning.
According to a release from the Tobago Emergency Management Agency (TEMA), around 12.25 am, it received a report of the 55-foot vessel, the “Crystal Eye,” sinking.
By that time, however, the crew of Bahamian vessel “Siem Spearfish” had responded to the fishermen’s distress call and rescued them.
They transported the men to the Scarborough Port, where they were examined by medical personnel from the Tobago Emergency Medical Services (TEMS). One member of the crew was treated for hypothermia.
TEMA stated that the men were accommodated at a guesthouse while arrangements were being made to transport them to Trinidad. “Thank you to the Bahamian team and all rescue parties involved for their swift action and assistance to the fishermen,” the release said.
