Kidnap victim Zaheer Esat

A 28-year-old man has been ar­rest­ed in con­nec­tion with the kid­nap­ping of busi­ness­man Za­heer Esat.

Esat, 46, was tak­en at gun­point from a ve­hi­cle at War­ren Road, Cunu­pia, around 1.50 pm on April 4 and was found wan­der­ing near the Ca­roni Cre­ma­tion Site around 8.15 pm on April 6.

He was tak­en by a pass­er-by to the Ca­roni Po­lice Sta­tion, where he told of­fi­cers he had es­caped by jump­ing out of a car trunk while be­ing moved from the lo­ca­tion where he had been held af­ter be­ing ab­duct­ed.

The UK-based busi­ness­man is the own­er of a pri­vate school for trou­bled youth in Leices­ter­shire, UK.

Con­firm­ing the ar­rest dur­ing yes­ter­day’s me­dia brief­ing at the Po­lice Ad­min­is­tra­tion Build­ing, Port-of-Spain, As­sis­tant Com­mis­sion­er of Po­lice (Crime) Richard Smith, said the vic­tim was tak­en for med­ical at­ten­tion af­ter he was hand­ed over to of­fi­cers of the An­ti-Kid­nap­ping Unit.

Esat, who is vis­it­ing Trinidad with rel­a­tives, was kid­napped af­ter two cars blocked the ve­hi­cle he was trav­el­ling in and gun­men grabbed him from the back seat. —An­na-Lisa Paul
