It seems fruits are now the preferred choice to have smuggle contraband items into the nation’s prisons.

On Wednesday, a 22-year-old Kelly Village, Caroni man was arrested by prison officers at the Maximum Security Prison in Arouca attempting to smuggle in four apples stuffed with packets of marijuana with a total weight of weighing 88 grams.

According to a police report, at about 1 pm a prison officer was scanning visitors when he observed a visitor with a bag containing the apples. However, on closer look, the officer observed that the apples appeared to look “weird.” An inspection revealed that the apples appeared to have been cut and glued. The apples were subsequently seized, cut open and the packets of ganja found.

The man, who is said to be an apple vendor was subsequently arrested and handed over to officers at the Arouca Police Station.

Last week officers also arrested a man who attempted to smuggle marijuana stuffed inside grapefruits.

Investigations are continuing.
