A bam­boo patch saved the life of pen­sion­er Trevor Charles of Mt St George To­ba­go.

Charles lost con­trol of a ve­hi­cle he was dri­ving and crashed through a wood­en bar­ri­er made of 2x4 rough pitch pine along the Wind­ward Road al­most a kilo­me­tre east of the Stud­ley Park Quar­ry.

The area had suf­fered some ero­sion and the soil and part of the south­ern end of the road­way col­lapsed in­to the sea.

Charles' ve­hi­cle plunged al­most 100 feet down the side of a steep in­cline but was blocked by a bam­boo patch pre­vent­ing it from go­ing in­to the sea. The Scar­bor­ough Po­lice told Guardian Me­dia that Charles was the sole oc­cu­pant of the ve­hi­cle. He was res­cued by po­lice and oth­er re­spon­ders and tak­en to the Scar­bor­ough Gen­er­al Hos­pi­tal where he re­mains ward­ed in a sta­ble con­di­tion. Mo­torists said there are oth­er ar­eas where land­slides have oc­curred and are in ur­gent need of re­pair.
