A bamboo patch saved the life of pensioner Trevor Charles of Mt St George Tobago.
Charles lost control of a vehicle he was driving and crashed through a wooden barrier made of 2x4 rough pitch pine along the Windward Road almost a kilometre east of the Studley Park Quarry.
The area had suffered some erosion and the soil and part of the southern end of the roadway collapsed into the sea.
Charles' vehicle plunged almost 100 feet down the side of a steep incline but was blocked by a bamboo patch preventing it from going into the sea. The Scarborough Police told Guardian Media that Charles was the sole occupant of the vehicle. He was rescued by police and other responders and taken to the Scarborough General Hospital where he remains warded in a stable condition. Motorists said there are other areas where landslides have occurred and are in urgent need of repair.
