Police believe that Akil Sylvester’s death was related to criminal dealings he had that may have gone wrong.
Sylvester, 38, of Corinth Hills, Ste Madeleine, died at the San Fernando General Hospital yesterday, after he and his friend Daniel Josiah, 30, of Mon Repos, were shot along Railway Line Road, Ste Madeleine.
Police said around 9.30 pm Thursday, Josiah was driving his white Nissan AD Wagon with Sylvester in the front passenger seat. As they passed at the back of Building 14 at Corinth Hill, a gunman wearing dark clothing ran in front of the wagon and fired several shots. Josiah was hit in his buttocks while Sylvester was shot in the abdomen and chest. Josiah continued driving and went to the hospital, where he remained in a stable condition up until yesterday. Sylvester underwent emergency treatment but died around 1.45 am yesterday.
San Fernando CID, Emergency Response Patrol and the South Division Task Force, led by Supt Gaffar, Insp Ramsumair and Sgt Williams, searched for the suspect but no one has been held. The wagon was impounded at the San Fernando Police Station. Police said Sylvester had been investigated for robberies in the past.
In an unrelated incident, two unidentified men were gunned down in Gonzales, Belmont, yesterday afternoon.
According to a police report, at about 2.45 pm residents at Temple Street heard several gunshots. The police were called and upon arrival, a search of the area was conducted. The police later discovered both men lying along a track. Police said they were both shot several times about their bodies. Up to press time, police were still on the scene of the double murder.
The murder toll now stands at 496 for the year so far. The toll at the end of November last year was 446. Investigations are continuing.
