Traffic is now backed up heading into Port-of-Spain along the Beetham Highway after a daring gun attack in rush hour traffic.
Details are still coming in but the T&T Guardian understands that just around 8.30 am, two masked men armed with high-powered weapons jumped out a car near the flyover at National Petroleum in the westbound lane. The men turned their guns on the driver of a silver Tiida, spraying the vehicle with bullets. The driver lost control of the Tiida and crashed into other vehicles before running into the railing which separates the west and eastbound lanes.
Police and emergency crew around the vehicle that was attacked on the Beetham Highway hours ago.
Other drivers along the highway took evasive action as they tried to escaped the bullets in a scene described as something out of a gangster movie. The gunmen also made their escape in their vehicle in the chaos which ensued, hitting other vehicles as they weaved through traffic and used the highway's shoulder to escape. One woman is said to have been injured after her car was hit by the getaway car, spun several times and landed in a ditch near NP. The getaway car was later found abandoned behind the nearby Bhagwansingh’s hardware in Sea Lots.
Police have identified Dwayne King as the victim. He was rushed to hospital with bullet wounds to the face, hand and chest and is said to be in critical condition.
Police believe the incident is gang related.
